"One Skein" Book Give Away
Hello Urban Fauna Studio Readers! I’m Rachel-Marie of KnittyDirtyGirl, Jamie and Blas’ new personal blogging girl. I’ll be giving you the scoop on some select fiber books + Urban Fauna artists KnittyDirtyGirl style. So here it goes! My first book review.
Book Review # 1
I finally bought a copy of the lovely book “One Skein”. This book has been an inspiration to me since 2007! With 30 very makeable projects who wouldn’t!? If you like my review of this little lovely, please enter to win a copy! Just leave a comment including your e-mail address and a project idea that will use the book “One Skein” to enter. I will use a random number generator to pick the winner once we get at least 25 comments. Yes, 25! I think that’s a reasonable goal. hehe

I have been getting project ideas from this book since back in 2007 when I created my own version of the “One Skein” Pom Pom scarf. I can’t think of a more fitting project for Urban Fauna Studio fans. Fans like you, who most likely have impressive stashes of fluffy textured colorful scraps perfect for showcasing in a pattern like this one. We all know handspun makes for spectacular pom poms! In my version, I snuck some plastic bag fringe in the pom poms as well, at the time I was really interested in “trashion”, haha. The possibilities are endless for this pom pom masterpiece! The photography in “One Skein” is stunning. When considering a book for my knitting book collection, I want the pictures to inspire me, to hold my interest, to really draw me in! And, oh drool, these photos are a feast for the eyes! Check out some of the actual photos from the book here on Leigh Radford’s website.

There is a whole section on “Dress Up Baby” including a bib, bolero, and hat. All are super sweet, and what better way to stash bust than baby knitting? Other Sections include: “Put It On”, “Take It With You”, “Make Your House a Home”, and “Rediscover Your Stash”.
Here is my long time buddy’s (sylvchezplum) version of the baby bolero. She used stripes instead of one color and added a crochet edge.

Also notable the Labyrinth Circle Rug. WOW!!! Not only an awesome, impressive concept, but it uses my beloved slip stitch! Yay! I just love how clever slip stitches can be.
There is a nice mix of knitting and crochet in this book. The two can live together in harmony after all! But really, if you want to do your best at needlework you should strive to be proficient in both techniques. Each has pros and cons, and each can use up one skein of yarn in different ways.
I’d like to showcase a neck warmer that my friend knit using Savoy yarn. On page 37 “Gaiter”.

Leigh Radford has a group on Ravelry here, where you can get and give feedback on any of her books including “One Skein”. There are currently 4730 projects to browse on Ravelry using patterns from”One Skein”. If that doesn’t convince you this is a must have book know what will! The cute cupcakes for sure… that will. *wink*
It’s been a pleasure meeting all of you! I’ll be back soon!
Keep it Knitty!
Rachel-Marie

I think I would make the socks, since I have a lot of yarn lying around.
hi rachel-marie!
i think i could totally rock a pom-pom scarf (or three!) lol.
that book looks adorable! i have a mile long list of books i’m currently coveting- now i’ll have to add this one to the list!

Oddly enough, I’ve been thinking about this book too. Previously, I’ve made a cowl to use up a single skein (50 g ball), but baby goodies seem to be the way to go.
I love making baby things and lots of other small gifts. This is a book I have wanted for a long time!
Hi! This book sounds amazing. I would love to win it – thanks for that chance with this give-away. I would love to knit something for a baby right now as my sister is expecting.
I’ve been wanting to learn to crochet so I would pick a one skein crochet project and give it a whirl. Thanks for the book review and interesting links!
One skein? That sounds perfect! I would be all over the scarves and bathroom objects that are in this book. It definitely looks worthwhile!
I would like to make the cupcakes. Or perhaps do a crochet project, I really need to get back into crochet. Time to get over the crummy enormous collar I made 20 years ago!
I love the photo of you with your pompom scarf!
I’ve been obsessed with the neckwarmers so I think that I wold make the Gaiter.
I’m a beginner and totally inspired by the gorgeous photos. I figure that if the inmates from Alcatraz could crochet, then so can I!
I’ve been wanting to do a rug like the Labyrinth Circle Rug for a long time now. I’d love to have the book for that pattern, and the rest.
I like the asymmetrical Cable Hat a lot, and have some very subtly self striping yarn that should work really well for that.
I am a short-attention-span type of knitter so I only do one and two skein projects! I’m particularly interested in the handbag patterns in this book to address my bag fetish.
I have tons of oddball skeins around the house just dying to become some of these cute little projects. And now that I am spinning, too, the need is twice as great.
Oh do I dream of this book! You have made it top on my list for Christmas! You Make it sound even more devine. Marion
those cupcakes are adorable, but i’d probably make a baby bolero for one of the many babies i know are on their way this summer
This would be a great book to use to tackle the beautiful one off skeins you sometimes pick up.
Pick me! Pick me!
I don’t have this book, but I have looked through it at book stores. If memory serves, it is a nice book with good pictures.
Ooooh, I love one-skein projects! Lovely scarf, I’d like to make one!
Lots of fun things in here– but I love that tote with the buttons. and of course the comfy cozy looking socks
I like the spiral rug project and the felted bowls. Woold love to have the book.
